Why gutters and moss go together
Loosened moss, shingle granules, conifer needles and leaves all wash down and pack the gutters. Wet debris can hold water against the roof edge and keep the lowest shingles damp, which feeds more moss.
How often
- Fall, once the big leaves are down and before the heavy rain settles in.
- Spring, to clear winter debris and any moss that came off the roof.
- More often if you have Douglas fir, big-leaf maple or oak close to the house.
What a good cleaning covers
- Gutters cleared by hand or vacuum, not just blown at
- Downspouts checked and flushed so they actually drain
- Debris bagged and hauled, not dumped on the lawn
- Loose hangers, sagging runs or leaking seams pointed out
Gutter cleaning is often cheaper when bundled with a moss treatment, because the crew is already on site and the ladder is already up.
